THE COMPLACENT CHURCHES
| Church | Introduction | Complaint | Description of Christ | Promise to Overcomers |
| Sardis (3:1-6) | A reputation for wealth; one of the most powerful cities of the ancient world. Shrine to Artemis, a deity believed to be able to restore life to the dead. | Outwardly alive. Inwardly dead. Had so compromised with society that they were Christian in name only (there are a few who have not soiled their garments). | The one who holds the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars – completely aware of our weaknesses. He is in complete touch with his church. | They will be dressed in white. Their names will not be blotted out of the Book of Life. Christ will acknowledge them before God and his angels. |
| Laodicea (3:14-22) | Even more wealthy than Sardis. Home to industries of banking, clothing, and medicine. | Neither cold nor hot. Wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked. Jesus has been effectively shut out of the church. | The Amen. The one whose word can be trusted without question. | Receipt of his love, discipline, and correction. An open invitation to the deepest fellowship possible with Christ, the Savior. |
